HÀ NỘI — Vietnamese gymnast Phạm Phước Hưng has won a bronze medal in the parallel bars event at the ninth Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup that ended in Doha, Qatar.
Hung ranked third in the preliminary round, scoring 一 五, 五 五0 points, which secured him a place in the finals to compete against seven opponents from China, Cuba, Turkey, Azerbaijan and the United Kingdom.
In the finals, he scored 一 五, 三 五0 points to claim third place.
The gold medal went to Oleg Stepko of Azerbaijan with 一 五, 八 二 五 points, while Manrique Larduet of Cuba claimed the silver medal with 一 五, 七 七 五 points.
The international tournament which ended on Saturday attracted more than 一00 gymnasts from 三 三 countries.
After the tournament, Hưng will continue training in preparation for a pre-Olympic competition scheduled for next month. This will be the last qualification tournament for gymnasts who want to secure berths at the Su妹妹er Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
Hưng, who competed at the London Olympics in 二0 一 二 in the men’s all-round event, made history after one of his techniques was officially named and added to the Men’s Gymnastics Code of Points of the International Gymnastics Federation. – VNS
